2-Speed Gearbox

2-Speed Gearbox

Project Overview: This project aims to create a 2-speed gearbox with neutral. The Project will include a gear system, a belt system, and a shifting mechanism.

Team Members: Kefan Wu, Johnathan Sun, Matthew Kwon

Objectives:

  • Build a 2-speed gearbox

  • Functional transmission system

  • Ensure smooth shifting and rotation

  • Learn to use shop machines

  • Time management: finish 24 hours ahead

Outcome:

We successfully made a functional 2-speed gearbox. The shifting and transmission mechanism runs smoothly and consistently. We also made some parts detachable to meet the size constraint.

Selector Fork: Translate the rotational motion of the shifting knob to the tranlational motion of the gear selector

Mechanisms

Selector: Slide onto the gear slectors to select the first and the second gear or neutral

Helica Gear: More contact area between the teeth of the gear, ensuring smooth power transfer

Challenges & Solutions

Tolerance: Our gearbox requires high-precision fabrication to ensure smooth switching. Some of our parts do not integrate properly due to tolerance issues

Solution: We printed three iterations with different tolerances (+- 0.5mm, +- 1mm, +- 0.25mm) to test the integration of the mechanism and found the best tolerance for each part

Integration: We designed 53 parts in total for this project. It’s hard to put all of them together due to limited space, and we must follow a certain order of assembly

Solution: We figure out the proper assembly order during the test fittings and mapped out the process in SolidWorks before we actually assemble the gearbox
