Wankel Engine Replica

Wankel Engine Replica

Project Overview: This automata is inspired by the Mazda 13B rotary engine, which uses rotaries to replace cylinders and pistons. The 13B Wankel engine has two rotaries connected eccentrically to a driveshaft, making it one of the most unique internal combustion engines ever made.

Project Objectives:

  • Replicate 13B Rotary Engine

  • Functional transmission system

  • Ensure smooth rotation of the rotaries

  • Integrate a belt-driven centrifugal supercharger

  • Create a SolidWorks exploded view

Outcome:

The model is made from PLA printed by my 3D printer. I made this model by tracing the picture of the engine and existing designs I found online. The two rotaries rotate smoothly, driven by a 160 rpm motor.

Challenges:

  • Connection of the gear system

  • Designing and printing large parts

  • Mounting the battery and motor boxes

Solutions:

  • I designed multiple mounting points to ensure the gear connections

  • I finished the design early to save time for printing, The project takes about 3 lbs of LA

  • I designed extra holes so I can mount extra parts, leaving enough spare space for tolerance

Skills Developed:

  • SolidWorks: Exploded view, Assembly, Complex geometry

  • 3D Printing: Support structures, printing with metallic texture

  • Mechanical design: complex gear systems and eccentric movement
